Autodesk® Revit® software was developed for architects, engineers, designers and builders. Revit categorizes lighting fixtures as model elements that are defined by families. The software includes several generic lighting fixture families that can be used in projects; manufacturer-specific fixture families can also be accessed via Autodesk Seek from within the software.

5 tips for using lighting fixture families in Revit
- When you are viewing the spotlight light source symbol, the length does not indicate the extent of the intensity of the light. The Visual Style “Shaded” will allow you to see the difference between the beam angle and the field angle when using a spotlight.
- Change the Light Loss Factor value for a lighting fixture in the project (whether to enhance or reduce light output) to reflect environmental factors.
- You cannot dim individual light sources in a light fixture if it is a nested family (containing multiple light sources) and is not shared.
- Rather than controlling lighting fixtures individually, you can use light groups to control entire sets of lights when rendering an image. Keep in mind that settings to dim, turn on or turn off lighting groups (or individual lighting fixtures) apply to individual 3D views only. Aside from the stated exception, light groups are available in all applicable areas of Revit.
- When defining a custom render quality, select “Simplified” to decrease render time. If realistic shadows are preferred, select “Advanced,” which uses area light sources to produce realistic images (light and material accuracy); this option increases render time. These settings can be found in the Render Quality Settings dialog.
