Eaton joins Czech National Competence Center for Cybernetics and Artificial Intelligence

December 5, 2018

Prague, Czech Republic – The Eaton European Innovation Center (EEIC) is now a confirmed partner in the Czech Republic’s National Competence Center for Cybernetics and AI. Consisting of 22 organizations, spanning both industry and academia, the consortium will focus on a wide variety of projects aimed at accelerating innovation in cybernetics and AI.

Eaton’s partners in the consortium include major industry players, such as Siemens, Škoda and Continental Automotive, as well as highly regarded academic institutions like the University of West Bohemia, the Czech Technical University in Prague (CVUT) and the Brno University of Technology (VUT).

The National Competence Center for Cybernetics and AI also recently competed against 17 other centers, each of which has a different industry focus, to receive Czech government funding. The consortium’s steering council will select the research programs to receive a share of this grant, with academic and industrial partners collaborating closely over the coming 24 months to make them a reality.

The EEIC will contribute its knowledge and expertise to the selected R&D programs through an existing partnership with CVUT’s Czech Institute for Robotics and Cybernetics (CIIRC) at no additional cost. However, as a member of the consortium’s steering council, Eaton will also help set overall direction for the center’s research, alongside companies like Rockwell, CzechInvest, Airbus and Unicontrols, as well as academic institutions that include the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) and the University of Ostrava. With the consortium fully expecting further government funding after 2020, Eaton is also well-placed to participate in future R&D projects.

EEIC director, Engelbert Hetzmannseder, comments: “We’re thrilled to be part of a consortium that’s enabling truly game-changing digital innovation. Cybernetics and AI are transforming both how our business functions and the solutions we create - helping our customers operate more sustainably, while increasing productivity and profitability. As part of this knowledgeable consortium, we’ll be able to drive research programs that make more intelligent and connected power management a reality”.

As a nexus for electrical, vehicle, hydraulic and aerospace innovation, the EEIC is committed to developing technologies that are safer, smarter and more sustainable. One of six Eaton innovation centers globally, the EEIC unites a diverse team of curious, cross-industry experts—pioneering new solutions to tomorrow’s most urgent energy challenges.

Ramanath Ramakrishnan, Eaton’s chief technology officer, adds: “Being part of the Czech National Competence Center for Cybernetics and AI is fantastic news. This opens opportunities to expand our expertise, network with industry players and universities at the forefront in this critical area. We are looking forward to additional collaboration across other experts in EU through the Czech Republic to attract top talent and reshape the nature of power management in the digital world.”

With a strong global engineering and manufacturing presence, Eaton combines knowledge and experience spanning both the Electrical and Industrial Sectors to open new opportunities for innovation and make a meaningful contribution to the world. As part of the National Competence Center for Cybernetics and AI, we will help develop new technologies and services that improve quality of life and the environment for everyone, such as more intelligent, connected and sustainable factories of the future.
